  • So what do I want to achieve with this website? List all the African trees with a picture or two, short description and a source for obtaining the seeds.....hmmm....lets see, there are about 1700 tree species native to southern Africa alone (the total floral kingdom in southern Africa is something like 24000 species!). I'll be busy for quite some time!! My main focus will be on trees indigenous to South Africa, but I will try to concentrate on trees with the following characteristics:
    1. Trees with edible fruit / leaves / roots
    2. Trees that can be grown as Bonsai
    3. Trees that are suitable to be grown as container plants.
  • I've been trying to update these pages every 2 weeks, adding at least 1 new tree with every update. After a bit more that a year I have realised that this target that I have set for myself is unrealistic! I either run out of suitable photographs (my skill with a camara is legendary - some of the photo's on these pages will prove that!) or simply out of time to do the necessary research on a tree to write the pages. I'm hoping that the database backend will help to speed up the updates.
  • If you have a stunning photo of an African tree, and you know the name of the tree, please feel free to e-mail it to me! I'll do my best to research the plant and put it up on the website. Full credits will go to the contributor of the picture.
  • If you should know an alternative name to a tree listed on this site, please e-mail it to me. I would like to keep the alternative names up to date as it is most often the only reference people have for a particular plant.
  • Buying seeds: I am (sometimes) able to provide seeds in limited quantities, however, I do not plan to turn this site into an online shopping site. There are companies selling seeds and plants (described on these pages) online. There are links to them in my Links page. If you are unable to obtain specific seeds from these companies please let me know. I might be able to source them.
  • Photo's and information. You are free to use the images and information on this site for your homepage, projects, assignment, etc EXCEPT if there is a (Copyright © 2000 - 2xxx The Photographer) somewhere on the photo. If you are desperate to use one of these pictures please e-mail me. If you do use some of the info from this website some recognition would be appreciated.
